Germany is the most developed industrial country in the world after the USA and Japan. The country is also the largest and most important market of the European Union with a population of nearly 84 million.
The heart of the German economy is the manufacturing industry and related service sectors. While the most important manufacturing sectors are industrial machinery, automotive and chemical industry, the telecommunication sector has become one of the leading fields of activity in recent years.
In Germany, which focuses especially on high value-added products in its foreign trade, more than half of the exports are capital goods. The largest share in exports is taken by means of transportation and their parts, as well as medicines. Important groups of goods in imports are machinery, transportation vehicles and their parts, oil and natural gas and its products, and medicines.
Türkiye-Germany Foreign Trade
Considering Türkiye’s bilateral economic and commercial relations with foreign countries, it is observed that the most intense relations are with Germany. In 2023, as in previous years, Germany ranked first in Türkiye's exports, while it ranked third in imports after the Russia and China.
Although the shift of German companies' production and imports to Central and Eastern European countries in recent years and the abolition of taxes and quotas for these countries caused a slowdown in Türkiye’s export growth in the early 2000s, Türkiye has started an upward trend in its exports to Germany since 2003.
Türkiye’s exports to Germany consist of 90% industrial products and approximately 10% agricultural and food products. On the other hand, imports from Germany consist of 98% of industrial products and 2% of agricultural and food products.
INDUSTRY
Industry is the heart and core sector of the German economy, and it is the most important sector that produces many innovations and innovations thanks to the strong network established with various sectors. One-fifth of the total gross value added in Germany is generated directly by the manufacturing industry. The strength of the industry is due to the fact that there is a strong cooperation between the private sector, the university and the state. Small and medium-sized industrial companies, which are usually run by families, are one of the important features of the "German business model".
The public image of German industry is characterized by automobiles and chemicals, medicines and machinery. The annual turnover of these four sectors is approximately 1.2 trillion euros, with a total of approximately 3 million people working in these sectors. In particular, the automotive sector, which is one of the most important carriers of the "Made in Germany" brand at the global level, is one of the most important components of the German industry.
As of 2022, 23.4% of Germany's gross national product comes from the industrial sector. Approximately 8 million people are employed in the sector, and the gross value added in the German economy is 963 billion euros as of 2021.
German companies represent 10 percent of European manufacturing companies and account for 31 percent of total turnover. 94% of Germany's total exports of goods consist of industrial products.
One of the key factors that makes German industry strong is the close integration of industry into the European single market. About one-seventh of every euro earned by German industrial companies is made up of intermediates from the EU. At the same time, the EU is the most important destination for German exports, accounting for more than half of all exports. In this respect, Germany's success as an industrial center is closely linked to economic and political integration in the EU.
In 2023, Germany's industrial sector started with a small growth. Production in the manufacturing sector (excluding construction) increased by 0.4 percent in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, offset by a sharp decline in power generation and energy-intensive industries, strong expansion in vehicle construction, and increased activity in mechanical engineering and the electrical industry.
In the third quarter, almost all sectors, except for the automotive sector and other vehicle construction, produced less than a year ago. As a result, industrial production in the first nine months of 2023 decreased by -1% compared to the same period last year.
In the manufacturing sector, production increased by 0.2% annually in the January-September 2023 period on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis. Individually, vehicle construction and other vehicle construction recorded the strongest growth with 14.4 percent.

In 2023, Germany exported motor vehicles and parts worth 274 billion euros, an increase of 10.6%. While the sector ranks first in the country's exports with a share of 17%, it ranks 3rd in imports with a share of 11% (147 billion euros). It is aimed to further develop capabilities in this area in the coming years with technological quantum leaps such as the planned climate-neutral aircraft ZEROe and the future European air combat system FCAS. At the same time, the European Service Module ESM, which is the technological center of the Artemis mission, which will take mankind to the Moon again after many years, is seen as one of the most important initiatives for the sector.
The aerospace industry in Germany has been recovering from the effects of the coronavirus crisis since 2022. According to the latest data released by the Federal German Aviation Association, the most important umbrella organization of the sector, sales reached 39 billion euros in 2022 (the total turnover of the EU aerospace sector is 239 billion euros), representing a significant increase of 19.4% compared to the value of 31.4 billion euros in 2021. This positive development is partly due to increased deliveries of the Airbus family of aircraft.
The aerospace sector is one of the sectors with the highest R&D expenditures in its turnover. R&D expenditures, which reached approximately 3 billion euros for 2022, correspond to 7% of the turnover of the aerospace sector.
