In the first seven months of 2018, Turkish steel exports increased both in volume and value compared to the same period of the previous year. With an increase of 2.4 percent the sector has reached 11.1 million tonnes in volume, and of 26.7 percent reached $ 8.4 billion in value.
Turkey’s steel exports was 11.1 million tons in the period of January-July of 2018 increasing by 2.4 percent in terms of value, and in terms of value it was 8.4 billion dollars with 26.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Evaluating the increase in the sector Mr.Adnan Aslan, Chairman of the Board of Steel Exporters' Association (ÇİB) stated: "Due to the increase in the prices of raw materials such as scrap and ore that used as input materials and price inrease in global finished steel products in the steel sector, our exports have been recorded at a much higher rate in value than in volume. When the Turkish steel sector exports are examined on the product basis, the decrease especially in the amount of construction steel exports and the increase in the amount of hot flats export attract attention."
Hot flats are in the forefront in steel product exports
Adnan Aslan also informed that in the 7 months of 2018 the steel product with the highest increase in exports was hot flats compared to the same period last year and continued: " The second steel product with the highest increase in exports was the profile. In particular, the steel exports to Algeria increased significantly by volume. In the third place was the alloy flats. Alloyed flats took a significant place especially in exports to Romania with its unit price higher than that of the products such as construction steel, hot flats, profiles, welded pipes that we exported in high tonnage.”
Aslan: We face the effects of trade actions filed against our country on construction steel
Referring to the fact that in the 7 months of 2018, the first product with the highest decrease in exports was the construction steel as compared to the same period last year, Aslan cited the reasons as follows: " In terms of both tonnage and value, we are seeing the effects of commercial cases that have been filed unjustly against our country for construction steel, which has been the main export product of the Turkish steel industry for many years. Along with the USA and Egypt implementing unfair protection measures against our country, BAE raising customs taxes with the aim of protecting local producers, are the countries we have been showing significant declines in our exports of construction steel. In the 7-month period of 2017, construction steel exports were realized to the Far Eastern markets at high tonnages. Looking at the year 2018, we continue to export construction steel to Singapore and Hong Kong, but we observe that we are lagging behind the previous year’s figures.” < Source : CIB
